Steel structural elements – and even some solid wood elements – are conductive and can be a source of condensation and conduction of cold from the outside.

The space around these elements is often limited, and the application of sprayed urethane (a higher-performance Type 2 insulation) is recommended, given its high R-value and adhesion.
