What is Spray Foam Insulation?

Spray polyurethane foam, commonly known as spray foam insulation, is a two-component plastic insulation applied as a liquid that expands within seconds to fill the cavity or coat the surface it is sprayed on. Because it expands into every gap and adheres directly to the substrate, it insulates and air seals in a single step. In a climate like Quebec's, where air leakage can account for a quarter or more of a home's heat loss, that combination is hard to beat.

There are two main types:

  1. Closed-cell foam (medium density, sometimes called 2lb foam). Provides approximately R-6 per inch in a rigid, water resistant covering. Able to act as its own vapour barrier at appropriate thickness. An excellent choice for foundations, rim joists, exterior walls, crawlspaces, etc.
  2. Open-cell foam (light density, sometimes called half-pound foam). Provides less R-value per inch in a softer, vapour permeable install. Expands greatly to fill irregular cavities and provides excellent sound dampening. A common choice in garage ceilings and other wall or ceiling assemblies.

How Spray Foam Installation Works

  1. The work area is prepared: surfaces protected, openings masked, and the zone ventilated.
  2. Our certified installer sprays the foam in controlled passes, building up to the specified thickness. Closed-cell foam is installed in passes of about 2 inches to manage the heat the curing reaction produces.
  3. Thickness is verified across the surface, and any excess foam is trimmed.
  4. Occupants stay out of the work area during application and for the curing period outlined by manufacturer specifications. We'll tell you when it's safe to re-enter.

Benefits & Where We Recommend Spray Foam

Spray foam insulation provides the highest R-value per inch of any common insulation type. With built-in air sealing, it helps eliminate drafts that other types of insulation may let through. Once cured, spray foam insulation adds rigidity to the assembly it's applied to, and continuous coverage around pipes, wiring and irregular framing or cavities.

We highly recommend spray foam insulation for many areas of the home:

  1. Basement and foundation walls, where closed-cell foam's moisture and vapour control is perfect for concrete walls.
  2. Rim joists, one of the most commonly under-insulated and leaky areas of the home.
  3. Hot roofs and cathedral ceilings, where venting is difficult or impractical.
  4. Crawlspaces, where tight, enclosed areas make spray foam perfect for efficient R-value in less installed depth.
  5. Garage ceilings below living spaces to prevent cold floors.
  6. New construction project or major renovations, where builders use it to hit effective R-value and airtightness targets efficiently.

Why Isolation Majeau for Spray Foam

Isolation Majeau's spray foam insulation teams are certified to provide the highest quality spray foam insulation install. We only use industry-leading spray foam products from leading manufacturers like BASF's Walltite, backed by manufacturer warranties.

Spray foam is the least forgiving insulation to install. Ratio, temperature, substrate condition, and pass thickness all affect the end result, and a bad job is very hard to fix. Our installers and top-of-the-line equipment ensure that every job we complete is installed correctly and safely.
